The Great American Horse Race was a once in a lifetime adventure. During the Bicentennial summer of 1976, two journalists traveled with and documented the longest horse race in history - - New York to California in 100 days.

Entries from 32 native states and nine foreign countries traveled with an international community of over 400 people at a rate of 35 miles per day, while camping in fairgrounds and pastures near small rural communities.

These people raced their horses and mules throughout the middle of America.

A robust mobile community of horse trailers, motor homes, pickups and 4x4's followed the racers from town to town.

This book contains the complete story, and over 200 of the 6,000 photographs the authors took that summer.
