Our involvement with the Great American Horse Race began in the spring of 1976 when we were hired to travel with the race and furnish copy and photographs for news releases. This book is compiled from photos taken that summer, and every photograph was taken during the Great American Horse Race. While we cannot possibly include everyone, we do apologize to those of you we leave out.

Many stories and claims with a variety of interpretations continue to be written and told around campfires about this race. This is our story. Talk to anyone who was involved; they might have something to add or have their variation of a particular incident, but everything included here is true.

The Great American Horse Race was a significant historical event. Never in the history of man has anything ever happened like what happened in the summer of 1976. These people deserve to have their story told; since we were the only journalists to travel with the race for the entire summer, we felt that if we did not tell it, no one else could.
